A friend who works in the office of the local church recommended this book to me, one of her parents had crossed over a few years ago and she is still dealing with the loss. The grief support person at the church where she works use’s this as a guide book. I did buy 8 of these books so far and have given away 6 of them to friends who have had a loss in the last two weeks. I have gotten wonderful comments from them that this book was helpful to them in their grief. I would recommend this book for anyone who has had a death in their family or of friends and neighbors. It not only guides the family of the deceased but also the friends who need to know how to offer assistance to the families. It also explains death in a manner that is not frightening or uncaring and gives much needed information for the caregivers of the ill before death.

This book is a general guide for all breeds and does have some photos of bernese mountain dogs and it covers all types of health problems, training, and puppy info and other important issues in owning dogs, however it is in general covering all dog breeds and I would recommend “Bernese Mountain Dogs by “Amy Christiansen”. However, these are two of the top books that I would give to anyone who has an interest in the Bernese Mountain Dog. I presently own both books.

This book has been a great reference over the years. It has great suggestions for many common ailments/problems I have run across for my dogs. I most recently ordered this book for my friend who has cats, after she spoke to me of some problems she was having with them. I highly recommend this.
This is read-aloud, for teachers, parents and grandparents to read to children. It is co-authored by me and my young daughter, Laura, to comfort those who have lost a pet. It is 32 pages and filled color photos that everyone will enjoy. It talks about our love for our cat, his illness, and making the difficult choice to put him down. The book is evangelistic in nature and talks about God’s love for us, which is far greater than our love for our pets; and about salvation only through Jesus Christ. We believe being in heaven with our pets and more importantly Jesus Christ can be a reality. The timing of this book coincided with the illness of Laura’s Grandpa Joe. It ends with a poem of dedication to “Poppy,” a World War II veteran and one of Laura’s heroes. Great reading for Christian bookstores, Christian and private schools, and the public sector or your choice.

This is a quick overview of this loveable little breed. Not detailed of course, but the author does point out the downside of “Westies” as well… to wit: they are terriers meaning that a) they bark (boy do they ever! Our westie has a bark a Great Dane would be proud of), b) terriers dig and c)they are hunters and won’t be able to tell the differnce between the mouse or squirrel outside and the family’s pet hamster. Despite these so called flaws (in other words, don’t blame your westie for being a westie)these dogs make wonderful pets and the authors love and respect for this breed shows on every page.The book offers good advice on caring for a West Highland White, as well as training one,(the training part written by another author) Maybe not worth 13 bucks, but still a worthwhile read for the owner of one of these dogs. As the author points out, the AKC breed standard has the perfect one line description of these wonderful little dogs: “…possessed of no small amount of self-esteem”

This is an awesome little book for an awesome breed of dog. For its size, this book packs in a lot of really good information for the OES owner or potential owner. My OES is six months old now and I have found this book to hit on everything I needed to know to take care of this little guy. Responsible dog ownership entails a lot of work and this book will be a big help for anyone thinking of adopting this breed. It is a big help when you can get solid information from very experienced OES owners and breeders.
The one thing I think the book should have emphasized a little bit more is the amount of time and work that has to be put into maintaining these dog’s coats. It can be a little overwhelming when every time you take these guys for a walk in the woods you end up having to spend an hour brushing them out.
This really is a great little book for anyone thinking of adopting this breed. I can speak from experience when I say these guys are not for the casual dog owner and they are not for everyone, and it will do the owner and the dog a great service to read this book so that you can get a head start on being a good OES owner. These guys are a lot of work but they are more than worth the effort.
